I just came out of a fat 17 months of unemployment after graduating with my Master's (even with this new job I am underemployed, but we won't talk about that now lol), and I have to say these are INCREDIBLY helpful points that I wish I had at the beginning of my time job searching. When you're in the middle of it, suddenly everyone has all of these suggestions like "make job-searching your full-time job etc." "fill out 10 applications a day" and honestly it's crap and a recipe for disaster! Of course job-searching cannot be my full-time job, it's exhausting and mentally-degrading as is and I'm not even getting paid for it like I would for a full-time position. There were days that it seemed I scrolled on LinkedIN from morning to midnight and felt that pressure to constantly look for new positions--it bled into every aspect of my life. Plus, just with the way the market is right now, you're waiting at least 3-4 months for people to respond to your applications, even if they want to interview or hire you. Prioritizing your mental and physical health while blocking out set amounts of time to job hunt is incredibly important, I am so happy to hear that you've found a method that works for you! Sending you so much strength and good vibes on your job-hunt journey, you are not alone!!
:') Thank you so much. Your words mean more to me than you think! I'm so glad to hear you found this piece helpful. Unemployment can (unfortunately) be a long journey so finding ways to make that path more sustainable is important! I'm glad to hear you've found work again! I believe even the smallest steps will help us get closer to our bigger goals. Appreciate you taking the time to read and comment!
thank you for sharing this! i’m recently going through something very similar (i even spent a solo week in mexico as soon as everything became official) but tomorrow begins the dreaded “make job hunting your job” and like you, i refuse to let this in-between period get the best of me! easier said than done, but here’s to trying. appreciate your candor and tips here 🫶
I just graduated and am going through a bit of a crisis (I tried calling it funemployment and it did not help), but this was so helpful! I'd been doing most of the things on your list already but it was comforting to read someone else also being frustrated with being told to "make looking for a job your full time job" and finding a way to keep your life going whilst looking for work. I've also struggled with feeling so uninteresting and going through a bit of an identity crisis, didn't realise how much I relied on being busy with something I deemed "worthwhile"
Beautiful post! Def agree on limiting LI scrolling, too many downer posts about the job market are not great for sustaining motivation in applying. I’d also add giving yourself grace to take breaks from the job search and refocus your efforts for a time into activities that refill your cup.
i was unemployed for 5 months recently and although it took most of those 5 months to figure these things out this is exactly where i ended up by the time i was actually landing job interviews and then eventually getting a job offer. very much some things people are told they should do but still struggle to take the time to sit and think about how they personally can take steps to implement these things
extremely relatable! my first post on here was all about this exact thing, I’ve also been unemployed since november (still am!) so it’s so nice to read a piece from the perspective of someone in my position <3
